A Treasure from the Library

I’ve been a James Christensen fan since high school. He just captiviates my imagination– taking me to the place I loved to play as a child, a magical place. He is so graceful with the human figure. His pieces are so full of symbolism and wonder…

So, when I stumbled upon this book at the library I was so excited. Brenna wanted books about fairies. I picked this one off the shelf and what a combination– the beloved Laura Ingalls Wilder and beautiful fairies. And the fairies looked so familiar. The book is illustrated by a guy named Richard Hull, who upon further investigation teaches at BYU…so, obviously a student of James Christensen.

The poems are fun and sweet. What else could you expect from Laura?

And a fun fact I learned about her: She didn’t write the Little House series until she had grown children. That gives me hope. Someday I will have time… Someday I can be a real artist.

Right now my kids need everything I’ve got.

A day in our Homeschool

We’ve been a little lax on school lately. Spring is in the air and we’re itching to get outside, but we have stuck to our bare-bones routine. We sing a song (or several if Jonah gets his way) and say a prayer, then Brenna works on memorizing the Articles of Faith. She’s on number 6 now. Then we read. Brenna reads me a book, I read a book Jonah picks out, and then I read a chapter of our latest novel. Right now we’re working on The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis. Usually we do some penmanship practice and I set Brenna free to color and draw to her hearts content. She’s become pretty serious about her art lately.

Here’s an orchestra she drew yesterday while listening to classical radio.

My advice to young girls everywhere:

Marry someone who knows how to do everything that you don’t.

Case in point– this website. I was ready for a change, made a few graphics with an ancient version of Adobe Freehand and, wala! Barry the computer genius did all the hard work. I just don’t have the patience or inclination to figure out all the programming stuff. There are too many things like these <> / [] \ and my brain turns to cheese and my eyes cross. But, being married makes it like I have two brains– and when the nearest one is completely inadequate, I can just turn the problem over to the other.

So, now that I have a new and improved sight, my mission is to have a crafty blog as cool as her (or her or her or her).

wool + kool-aid = felt fun

Today the kids helped me make my biggest piece of felt ever. Then I cut it up and we broke out the Kool-Aid. I’m pleased with the colors we got. These are going to make some cute little journals, don’t ya think?
